i know some guys that drain the bowls by pulling out a bottom bowl screw to be safe....This is my fifth winter and I've never done anything except shut the car off and hope spring gets here soon.....The inside of mine has always been spotless...Curt

I read all the time where guys leave E85 in their car over the winter and no problems. That has not been the case for what I have seen. I have seen carbs pulled off and sit for awhile, and when you take the float bowls off them, they are full of sticky stuff crud. I don't know where this comes from, but something in the E85. I just pulled my carb off a month ago to have some engine work done. I drained it and set it aside. When I got ready to put it back on, I took off float bowls and found lots of dried white powder residue at diff points inside. Some was on the float bowl screws, when I rubbed off the power, it had eaten the coating off the screws where the buildup was. No really damage, but could be over time. For me, I would always run gasoline to the fuel pump and pull off carb during the winter, better to be safe than sorry. I just ran across an Q&A article from Horsepower Innovations tech article that was very good. Part of it states "The fact of the matter is that uncontaminated ethanol is not corrosive. However, Ethanol is hygroscopic in nature and is capable of absorbing large amounts of water. When ethanol based fuels become contaminated with significant amounts of water (over 2% by volume) the formation of mild organic acids can occur. Formic acid, acetic acid and other compounds can adversely affect soft metals like aluminum, zinc, brass, and copper causing a white powdery residue. The solution is simple – keep your fuel dry! Seal drums of fuel by removing the pump and installing a plug. Keep your fuel cell or tank full if not in use. Pick materials to use in the fuel system and engine that are corrosion resistant." They also recommend winterizing your carb whether using E85 or gas.
