Alot of time a Magician will use smoke and mirrors to give you an illusion and make you think that something is happening thats really not there.
they decieve you into thinking something happened or is happening that just really isnt so....
Recent years, I seen this going on with another carburetor builder.
a Gentleman called me to ask a few questions and find out the truth about E85, as he was told some stuff that just didnt seem to be correct, yet the other builder was selling the story as a factual statement.....he wanted a second opinon, so he called me.
The man (customer) called another well known gas carb builder and inquired about E85, when almost instantly the builder went into a Methanol sales pitch, and how if he was going to switch to alcohol it should be methanol not E85....that E85 shouldn't be used in a performance engine...etc.....
the customer stood his ground and wanted to know about E85 as thats why he called.
So the builder then proceeded to back up , talk out of the other side of his mouth and tell the customer an E85 conversion would cost $660. ,( I charge $402 for the same style carburetor.)...
and as they talked the builder also said that the customer would need this $100 wizzz bang regulator that was vacume regulated and it would "keep him from sucking his bowls dry".....(more smoke & mirrors)
the story sounded good and convencing.....
he was told that he needed 6 psi at idle and around 11 psi at WOT.....
"WHAT?"...lol
Im sorry, but I have not seen a mild 406 chevy that turns 6200rpm ever suck the bowls dry unless there was a fuel delivery issue.
and also you dont want more than 7.5 psi with E85, I prefer lower....like around 6psi..
I have built E85 carburetors for all types of engines and racing, and we have had them on dynos and O2 sensors in all parts of this country of ours....and NEVER have I seen or heard of the need for 11psi of fuel pressure at WOT.....
they went on to discuss spark plugs and timing....of which a colder "METHANOL PLUG" was recommended as well as 45* timing that would retard back as the rpms changed.
I know it was rude, but at this point I had to laugh into the phone .....as the customer was almost sold on the hype and was just fooled by the smoke & mirrors and an illusion of a good sales pitch.
the information this guy is handing out to his customers about E85 is just wrong, when I took the time and explained in details the hows and whys of E85 his confusion of E85 turned into anger and a strong dislike for someone that would mislead him like that......
I then went on to explain that while some are very good gasoline carb builders they just dont understand the properties of E85 and they have to BS their way through the sale of an E85 carb or conversion.
And while im sure that he believed what the builder was saying to be truthful at the time, the builder just didnt understand E85 and was passing along BAD INFO trying to get the sale.....
so my advice to you would be this.....
If your E85 builder does any of the following, just hang up the phone and call me.
1.tries to talk you out of E85 and into methanol.
2.says you need to buy specialty parts for it to work.(wizzbang regulator)
3 tells you to run a COLD plug.
4 tells you that the full throttle timing needs to be retarded or advanced from where it is now.
5 tells you that you HAVE to RUN 85% blend, or wait until 85% is available.
6. they flow bench calibrated their E85 carburetor.
7 tells you E85 wont work with 9:1 compression
8 tells you you cant run 16:1 compression
Like what I have to say or not , im not going to play any smoke & mirror games with you to try and get a sale, im not going to sell you something you dont need to try and make a few extra dollars.
I do know E85 and how to tune for E85 and Im going to do what I have to do to make sure that your E85 Carburetor is working to your satisfaction.
And BTW.....about the carb builder that the man spoke to.....I have repaired about 10 of his E85 carburetors, each one having a different calibration and tune up in it.
and also, every single one of his customers that he took for $760 (carb conversion & regulator) has been more than satisfied with the ET gain they got after I fixed it......Im just sorry they had to spend the $402 more to have me fix his mistakes.
you have a choice of where you go, spend your money once, or spend your money twice....
No Magic sales pitch here, and the best quality E85 products,
Thats why were #1 in E85 carburetor conversions.
Thank You for your business.
